New York: Libertine Spring 2015

Watching the joyful riot of color, texture and pattern that was the Libertine Spring 2015 collection come down the runway, it was easy to be mesmerized by the visual feast taking place, and to miss the underlying truth of designer Johnson Hartig's work; the craftsmanship is exquisite.  Every seam, every dart, every bead, every appliqué, it's all done with the razor sharp precision of a master couturier.  Getting a sneak peek at the pieces backstage before they were sent down the runway, I marveled at the intense work that went into every look, the layers upon layers of detail on the pieces themselves, and the elaborate necklaces that were made to match, which reminded me ever-so-slightly of the "Decora" looks I shot on the street in Tokyo last Spring.

That being said, all that technical work is just structure, or the skeleton of the collection, its spirit, its heart was clearly that joyful riot on the runway. Inspired by an amalgam of ideas from "Swinging 60's" to "Raver 90s" the collection was blended perfectly together with a current of love running through the show. Each piece showed the designer's love of creativity, love of life, love of individuality, and love of this dear pet-companion Pocket, who passed recently (and who's adorable face appeared on several of the tees within the collection.)

Favorite pieces? There were way too many to single out, so we'll just let you look at the whole collection from start to finish below, and choose for yourself.
