Dear Haikusue:
For all of high school I was what you would probably call obese. I was a bullied a lot at school, called names because of my weight, and never felt like I could do anything about it. After years of feeling sick and depressed all the time I decided to take a year off before college and make my own health a priority. Well, it's been 13 months since graduation, and I've lost over 100 pounds! I feel great, and am ready start the rest of my life and go to college. I never applied to any four year schools because I couldn't imagine myself going through four more years of torture. My parents say I should just go to my local community college, DVC, and then transfer to the school of my dreams (NYU!) But I feel like if I do, I will just be surrounded with all the people that teased me in school, and I will never be able to shake my 'fat girl' image. I want a fresh start but I don't know if it's too late. What should I do?
Signed,
Newly Svelte in Contra Costa County
