Tokyo: Backstage at Hanae Mori Spring 2015

There is always something special about shooting backstage at Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week Tokyo. Whether it's the tangible sense of calm that controls the room (none of the yelling, screaming or emotional outbursts seen in New York!) or the intense precision of the work being done, there really is no experience quite like it.

For the Spring 2015 season,  we are kicking off our backstage coverage with the Hanae Mori by Yu Amatsu show, where the teams from L'Oreal Nihon and Maybelline were putting together a fresh and pretty look that was the perfect accent to Amatsu's gorgeous collection.

Here's what they did beginning with the hair

Soft and with a sense of 'chicly undone',  the loosely twisted buns worn by models required an amazing amount of work to achieve. Stylist began by smoothing out and setting hair using either a traditional hot roller technique or in a few cases the Babyliss Miracurl Iron was used. Once hair was set, stylists sprayed a light covering of L'Oreal Texture Expert spray and allowed hair to cool. Thoroughly cooled hair was then brushed out and smoothed into a low pony using L'Oreal Mythic Oil.  Ponys were then divided in half, and in half again creating four equal sections. Each of the four sections were then meticulously twisted up to form a clover-like shape on the back of the head. (This process was done, and undone many times until the master stylist approved the look.)Finally  hair was resprayed with L'oreal Texture Support.

Now on to the make-up

Creating a modern twist on an almost 1960's vibe, artists began by perfecting skin using foundation , concealer and finishing powder from the Maybelline Pure Mineral line. Faces were then given dramatic pops of color via a bright Chartruce eye and a bold purple-pink lip.

Finishing off the look was a pale lilac nail, that was both subtle and thoroughly modern.
